Overalls and Summer Sweaters

Ah, June in Kansas City! It’s time for long evenings, baseball, and carefree outfitting. I’ve got something nostalgic for your fashion consideration in this round of The Closet: overalls.

How long has it been since you’ve worn a pair of overalls? Especially of the slouchy, faded, non-stretch variety? It’s been a few decades for me, but I really couldn’t resist giving this set a try. Wide legs are everywhere, and the general baggy fit seemed more appealing than a skintight version.

A key factor in making these overalls work for warmer weather: look for thin, worn-in denim. Pass on anything heavy or stiff or you’ll be miserable once the humidity kicks in. Another tip: size up like I did here for an even slouchier fit, which ups the breezy factor.

What to wear underneath? So many options! I chose a lightweight linen sweater in a summery neon coral. Perfect for those cloudy days or cool June nights. Pops of white from a pair of sandals and white-trimmed cat-eye sunglasses anchor this outfit post-Memorial Day.

How else to wear overalls? A pair like these will be just as cool with a crop top or simple tee. Colors, neutrals, print – pick your favorite and it’ll work. Perhaps as a swimsuit coverup for those poolside barbecues? A nice remix from your standard sarong.

Just keep the fit of your top on the tailored side to balance all  the volume of the overalls and you’re all set!

Enjoy the start of summer, KC!
