Shacket Style

Happy 2021!

Just in time to start a new year I have a new fashion term you’ll be hearing this winter: the shacket. It’s used to describe a shirt-style, lightweight jacket, typically in a plaid print. Shirt + jacket = shacket. It’s style math!

Let’s take this trend for a spin, shall we? I started with a camel and cream plaid shacket. The slightly oversized, boxy cut balanced nicely layered over a fitted gray bodysuit. A bold and fun print, but in neutral tones means it works with almost anything in your casual closet.

Keeping with that tailored theme, I chose high-waisted skinny jeans. A darker wash and a higher waist lengthens the leg line (who doesn’t love that?) especially when worn with a pair of suede mules that have a bit of a heel.

Accessories add more style punch: a cool leather belt bag and an Italian snake chain necklace. The belt bag is a great alternative if you don’t have much to carry (this one fits a credit card and a lipstick) or don’t want to commit to a bulky fanny pack. Chains like the one I’m wearing here made a major comeback last year, and you’ll be seeing them everywhere in 2021! They add a retro glam element to any look.

What I love about the shacket? It’s lightweight enough to be worn indoors, but has enough heft for milder winter days. Look for something in wool to get extra cozy. The shacket dresses up a simple base layer for those Zoom meetings without being too fussy and will transition nicely once winter fades into spring.

Happy New Year, Kansas City!
