It’s time to go to red light therapy.

Red light therapy (RLT) is becoming increasingly recognized in the world of health and wellness. Known for its ability to rejuvenate skin, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being, it has gained popularity among everyone from athletes to beauty enthusiasts.
How It Began
So, what was the impetus that started this craze? It was NASA that originally began experimenting with red light therapy on plant growth in space. That accidentally led to the discovery that the light helped combat muscle atrophy, bone density loss, and aided in faster wound healing in astronauts. Now, this therapy is widely medically accepted in its use in photodynamic therapy.
How does RLT Work?
Before diving into the differences between the popular RLT products, it’s helpful to understand how red light therapy works. RLT uses specific wavelengths of light – typically red and near-infrared (NIR) – to penetrate the skin. These wavelengths stimulate cellular processes that can help improve skin health, reduce inflammation, boost collagen production, and enhance muscle recovery after workouts. The therapeutic effects stem from enhancing mitochondrial function, which powers the cells’ ability to repair and regenerate.

Wavelength Color & Benefits
Red Light (600-850 nm) ~ Best for wrinkles, fine lines, and inflammation reduction. Reaches the deeper layers of the skin, including the dermis which lies below the epidermis.
Near-Infrared Light (800-1000 nm) ~ Best for muscle and joint pain, inflammation reduction, stimulates circulation, and accelerates tissue repair. Reaches the deepest layers of the skin.
Is It Safe?
Studies show no side effects from RLT when used as directed. It is not toxic, not invasive, and not as harsh as some topical skin treatments. Unlike cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or tanning booths, red light therapy does not emit this harmful type of light.
Personal Usage
Red light therapy is often used in clinical, spa, and home wellness settings. For home use, many red light devices have received FDA approval, including infrared masks, wands, and therapy panels, or towers, which provide larger body areas to be treated.

Making the Right Choice
Red light devices come in various forms, including wands, masks, and towers. While they all share a similar purpose, their design and functionality can affect the therapy’s overall effectiveness. Factors such as coverage area, irradiance, cost, and ease of use should guide your choice.
Pick Your Product
LED Masks ~ Targets wrinkles, dark spots, inflammation, and acne. Brands that are dermatologist-recommended and medical-grade will produce the best results.
Wands ~ Compact, handheld, convenient for travel, built for targeted spot treatments. Be sure to look for the brands that supply a higher output for better results.
Towers ~ Provide broader body coverage, high power output, and more versatility. A smart choice for comprehensive at-home RLT.
It’s essential to weigh the long-term value of your purchase. While there are many affordable red light devices on the market, cheaper products often sacrifice quality and product lifespan. Investing in a higher-quality device ensures durability, effectiveness, and better long-term value. A reliable, well-designed device can save you money in the long run and provide a more satisfying therapeutic experience.

Taking It A Step Further
If you want to step up the game a bit more, an infrared sauna might be what you’re looking for. A quick session can help you reduce stress and fatigue, relieve muscle pain, improve skin, and detoxify your body.
We visited with Amy Krause, AKBD, owner and principal designer at Amy Krause Design, here in Kansas City. A member of ASID and NKBA, Amy incorporated Clearlight’s Sanctuary 3 Full Spectrum 3 Person Infrared Sauna in a bathroom remodel.
“Long-time clients of mine remodeled a lower-level bathroom so they could include a sauna to enrich their wellness routine,” Amy shared. “Their home is very unique, French country in style, and absolutely beautiful with luxurious appointments throughout. The bathroom was designed in keeping with the rest of the home. Classic marble tile, a sleek bidet, and digital shower controls were incorporated into the design. The Clearlight® Sanctuary 3 was the icing on the cake. The finish was the perfect complement to their wood accents throughout, so while the sauna is on the more contemporary side, it is cohesive with the rest of the home.”
If you look in the mirror and see “things” you would like to change, it never hurts to try something different. The red light treatment may give you a boost in your exercise recovery and attention to skincare. Do a little research, be patient for results, and here’s to looking at you, kid!
