Customized Cabinetry
Story by Mollie Pfeifer / Sponsored Content
Cabinetry is not an accessory to a renovation; it is the architectural backbone of the room. Custom Wood Products has built its brand around that belief, positioning itself not as a remodeler but as a dedicated creator of custom cabinetry engineered for precision, consistency, and long-term performance.

Founded in 1981 by home builder Don Lake, Custom Wood Products began with a clear purpose: to craft cabinetry with integrity and stand behind the work. From its Kansas roots, the company has grown into a respected name serving designers, remodelers, and builders locally and through independently owned kitchen and bath dealers nationwide. Many members of the team have spent decades refining their craft within the organization, contributing to a culture grounded in skill and pride in workmanship. Today, the company continues under the ownership of Kevin and Caroline Gray.
In the Kansas City market, Custom Wood Products builds and installs cabinetry and supplies countertops. It does not manage full-room remodels or coordinate construction trades. Instead, it partners with the professionals who do, allowing each project to benefit from focused expertise in cabinetry design and installation. With the 2022 acquisition of Profile Cabinets and its Kansas City plant, Custom Wood Products has nearly doubled production capacity in this market while maintaining long-standing builder and remodeler relationships.

Design flexibility is central to the Custom Wood Products offering. A broad selection of door styles, along with overlay and inset options, allows projects to move between traditional, transitional, and contemporary aesthetics. Drawer construction choices and styling details support both durability and visual continuity. Stained finishes are hand-wiped to enhance depth and character, and both stains and paints are sealed with conversion varnish finishes selected for long-term resilience. According to Billie Deatherage, brand ambassador for Custom Wood Products, “Investing in quality, furniture-grade cabinetry will yield lifetime benefits. High quality cabinetry is timeless.”

WHAT’S NEXT
We continue to see a trend toward wood-stained finishes after years of white kitchens dominating the market, with rift-sawn white oak, walnut and hickory as the most popular wood species. Our new Konza door (slim shaker) series is a very popular style that we expect to endure for many years.
The company outlines a defined project path from consultation through installation. Designs are reviewed before cabinetry moves into production, and a delivery date is guaranteed once production begins. A service “Cabinet Medic” program is in place to address adjustments if needed, reinforcing a commitment that extends beyond installation day. Custom Wood Products also backs its cabinetry with a limited lifetime warranty for the original homeowner.
Through its Mission design center and national dealer network, Custom Wood Products reinforces a brand built on craftsmanship and reliability. Designers and builders turn to the experienced sales team for cabinetry that supports the architectural intent of a space while maintaining consistent quality from order to installation.
Custom Wood Products continues to focus on what it has done since 1981: craft cabinetry, support its professional partners, and deliver products designed to endure. The result is custom cabinetry built through a structured manufacturing process, installed with precision, and designed for long-term performance.
