90’s Back-To-School Chic

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to jump into a new season of style. After a long, hot KC summer, I’m ready for cooler breezes and a fresh take on fall fashion. But our Midwest climate would have me wait a bit – even though the calendar says September, summer weather is hanging on! Here’s a sartorial compromise to get the best of both as we switch into back-to-school mode.

A ribbed knit sweater with a pretty sweetheart neckline kicks off this look. A heavier fabric hints at fall, but the cute cap sleeves minimize the chance of overheating. As the season downshifts into cooler temps, you can layer a cardigan over the top (worn traditionally or draped over the shoulders for a preppy vibe) to stay warm. Want to add some edge? A classic black motorcycle jacket. Instant attitude!

Next is an oh-so-90s print midi skirt. A longer length and an earthy brown base anchor the look in autumn, as opposed to something shorter and brighter that we’d see in the summer months.

Speaking of 90s, square-toed sandals are back in a big way. Sandals are still in play until things really cool off, so lean into this trend while you can! Once those evenings start getting too crisp for open toes, pop on a classic white sneaker to carry this look into early October. Want to achieve full 90s prep? A chunky loafer does the trick.

Looking for on-trend accessories? Pearl anything gets the job done. I chose a pearl and gold necklace, but you can find this style resurgence in everything from earrings to rings to embellishments on sweaters. A little pearl piece always adds a feminine touch!

Enjoy your September, KC!
