New Build Bathroom Fosters Relaxation and Rejuvenation

In the primary suite of a new build in Oak Grove sits a bathroom steeped in understated luxury. Calm colors, natural finishes and cabinetry with clean lines create a feeling of tranquility and respite for homeowners Penny and Vince Barreto.

The Barreto’s relied on Interior Designer Kelly Lankford with INSPo by KHL Design Studio to design not only the bathroom but the rest of their 2,767-square-foot home.

“For the bathroom, we wanted to create a feeling of luxury,” Kelly says. “The homeowners wanted everything to be light and airy.”

Because the house is “their dream home”, Kelly focused on ensuring the bathroom would deliver exactly the mood they wanted as well as balance the desires of both husband and wife for this space.

Kelly’s design started with the white oak cabinetry for the bathroom since white oak had been used in the kitchen and elsewhere in the house.

“The homeowner fell in love with the white oak,” Kelly says. “We wanted to carry that element into the bathroom to make it look cohesive with the rest of the house.”

To create the feeling of refined luxury, Kelly carefully selected tile, finishes and paint to complement the white oak cabinets.

The two-sink vanity features a countertop of black granite with beautiful veining in a leathered finish. The combination of the granite and the brass plumbing fixtures “worked well because we had combined black and brass throughout the home,” according to Kelly.

The bathroom sports a large window over the soaker tub and a transom window in the shower, both with seeded glass for privacy.

“The homeowners really wanted to flood the bathroom with light,” Kelly says.

The shower stars as the room’s focal point. A large accent wall in the shower shows off unique tile mimicking wood in a chevron pattern on a “really big scale”, Kelly explains. It carries the wood element of the cabinetry into the shower space. Underfoot, the shower’s pebble floor looks like river rock.

But it really is the “field tile” – the foundational tile – on the adjacent shower walls that Kelly credits for bringing together the entire soft color palette used in the room. This white tile with marble-like veining unites the room’s gold tones, grays, and light browns.

“The white tile really pulled all three of those colors together,” says Kelly. “It was key.”

Further, the sheer size of the shower contributes to the feeling of refined luxury.

“It’s a large-scale shower, so we took the opportunity to have two shower heads, body sprays, and a handheld for a tailored experience they can enjoy and customize,” Kelly explains.

Other inviting aspects of the bathroom include heated floors and lit mirrors over the sinks. All the Delta plumbing fixtures feature brushed gold.

“Putting together all the layers of cabinetry, tile and plumbing fixtures gave the bathroom the look and feel we were after,” says Kelly.
