Bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces. Instead, they’re evolving into personal sanctuaries where wellness meets luxury design. From ice baths and digital shower systems to warm wood tones and intelligent lighting, today’s bathroom renovations are all about creating an elevated a uniquely elevated and personal experience. We spoke with Lisa Otterness and Jenna Kautz of the Kohler Store for insight on the innovative bathroom trends that are transforming the way we think about these intimate spaces and turning everyday routines into restorative rituals.

KCH&S:  What’s the biggest shift you’re seeing in bathroom design philosophy right now?

KOHLER:  Spa-like or boutique are the biggest design drivers for most clients. A serene space with natural materials and neutral  colors creates a spa-like feel, while graphic patterns and bold accents create a boutique atmosphere inspired by high-end hotels. Large whirlpool tubs are being replaced most often, with expanded showers featuring rain heads, body sprays, and hand showers being the most requested renovations.

KCH&S:  Which specific trends are you most excited about for 2025?

KOHLER:  Wellness features are becoming huge in 2025. Ice baths and ice showers are expanding beyond traditional wellness options like saunas and steam. These innovations are driven by technology and wellness innovators like Dr. Jonathan Leary of Remedy Place, and their sleek aesthetics appeal to both designers and homeowners.

KCH&S:  How are sustainability and eco-consciousness influencing bathroom design choices and what eco-friendly options are clients requesting most?

KOHLER:  Smart toilets are the most popular eco-friendly upgrade. They combine water-sense efficiency with bidet features, tankless design, automatic functions, and heated seats — making them both eco-friendly and family-friendly.

KCH&S:  What role is technology playing in modern bathrooms and which smart features are becoming must-haves versus  nice-to-haves?

KOHLER:  Mechanical and digital shower systems offer cleaner profiles and multi-functionality. Mechanical systems replace multiple trims with one sleek interface, while high-performance digital showers let you combine water, steam, sound, light, and remote operation to transform your routine.

KCH&S:  Can you share some insights on color and material trends?

KOHLER:  While greens remain popular, warm neutrals like rift-cut oak are winning more fans. The minimal grain pattern appeals to those who grew up with golden oak, and with light finishes and sleek lines, it’s perfect for warming up all-white spaces.

KCH&S:  What’s one bathroom trend that might surprise our readers that people might not expect?

KOHLER:  Lighted mirrors and medicine cabinets are replacing traditional bar lighting above mirrors. They offer interior mirrors, electrical outlets, and smart storage to keep vanities clutter-free, plus integrated LED lighting with dimmable options for better illumination.
