In 1980, Jake and Debby Schloegel took a $300 leap of faith and started what would become Schloegel Design Remodel. The purchase came with a wooden box, two old stepladders and the beginnings of a business built right here in Kansas City.

More than four decades later, Schloegel has grown into a full-service remodeling and handyman service company, but its roots remain firmly planted in the community where it began. Today, Jake and Debby’s son, Charlie Schloegel, and Chris Peterson have taken the reins. Chris’s story started as a carpenter, and over the years he worked his way through nearly every area of the company before becoming a co-owner.

Together, Charlie and Chris are carrying the business into its next chapter while holding onto something that has always been central to Schloegel: the people behind the work.

“Our team is what makes Schloegel what it is,” says Charlie. “You can have a great process and beautiful designs, but ultimately it’s the people showing up every day, solving problems and working together who create the experience our clients remember.”

Investing in those people has become as important to Schloegel as investing in the homes it remodels. The company focuses on professional development and creating a workplace where people can build long-term careers. Most team members have been with Schloegel for years, some for decades, bringing an uncommon depth of remodeling knowledge to each project.

That commitment has earned Schloegel recognition as a Kansas City Business Journal Best Place to Work multiple times. “The award is an honor, but what matters most is what it represents: a team that enjoys coming to work and takes pride in what they do,” says Charlie.

Something else the Schloegel team takes pride in is being part of Kansas City and the homes that shape its neighborhoods. From century-old Tudors and bungalows to newer homes in Johnson County, variety is part of what makes the work so rewarding. One project might mean reworking a historic floor plan while the next is finishing a basement for a growing family. Schloegel has never pursued a signature style or a single type of home.

Schloegel’s success across such a wide range of homes and lifestyles comes from a custom design process that begins with how their clients live and how their homes need to work. That may mean helping a family stay in a neighborhood they love, creating room to grow or adapting a home for aging in place. Schloegel’s experienced designers consider everything from layout, storage and traffic flow to architecture, materials and the details that make a home feel personal.

That planning also serves another purpose. Clear communication, detailed design and accurate pricing help uncover questions before construction begins and create a remodeling experience with fewer surprises.

Those experiences often lead to relationships that last far beyond one project. Schloegel has worked with clients through multiple remodels, different homes and, in some cases, multiple generations of the same family.

Today, that long-term relationship with a home extends through Schloegel’s Handyman Services. Alongside kitchens, additions and whole-home remodels, the team can tackle repairs, maintenance, installations and smaller updates. The goal is to be a partner for every chapter of a home, from large-scale remodels to the repairs, updates and maintenance that keep it working well.

Schloegel recently expanded to the Lake of the Ozarks, extending its full-service remodeling and Handyman Services to a community where many Kansas City families also spend their time. The setting may be different, but the approach is the same: strong design, experienced people, clear communication and relationships built for the long haul. The geography may be growing, but the foundation Jake and Debby started building in 1980 remains remarkably familiar. And as homes, families and communities continue to evolve, Schloegel plans to keep evolving right alongside them.
