Let the Sun Shine !

1.

Sunscreen by the Numbers

Look for sunscreen with a SPF of 30 and says broad-spectrum on the label. This means it protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Put 1 ounce (which would fill a shot glass) on at least 15 minutes before going outside and regardless of the SPF number, reapply at least   every 80 minutes.

2.

Lotion or Spray ?

Lotions tend to provide more protection as we rub it in with our hands until it is soaked in, having it be completely absorbed by the skin rather than sitting on top of it. Sprays can reach hard to reach spots on our shoulders and backs, giving protection to areas we may miss. Make sure you give each area of your body a thorough 6-second spray then rub it in the best you can.

3.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Blues

The skin around your eyes is thin and vulnerable to aging, making it a common spot for skin cancer. The best sunscreen for this area, and that includes your eyelids!, should have a mineral formula, made with  zinc or titanium dioxide as they are made for sensitive skin and won’t sting your eyes when you sweat.

4.

Makeup Doesn’t Cover It

If your foundation or BB cream says it contains sunscreen, you are better off thinking it doesn’t. Most of us don’t apply enough makeup to have the SPF to come into play. You are better off applying a facial sunscreen product and then your foundation or BB cream. And no, applying a SPF 30 foundation followed by a SPF 15 face powder doesn’t equal SPF 45 protection.

5.

Grab the Shades

Sunglasses are a must when out in the sun. Rather than just grabbing a pair from a dollar store, make sure the lenses provide total UV protection.  Ensure that they block enough light – sunglasses should screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light. If you’re not sure, if you can see your eyes when standing in front of a mirror grab a different pair. Looking at the world through rose colored glasses isn’t a good idea here.

6.

Park It in the Shade

10am – 2pm is when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you’re hanging out at the pool, find an umbrella to sit under when not in the water. But don’t forget to keep applying that sunscreen as you’re still being exposed to reflected and indirect UV rays!

7.

Faux Show

Just looking for a tan? Skip the sun and grab a bottle of self-tanner. Find your formula – lotions, sprays and mousse are great bets. There are even drops you can add to your daily moisturizer. Whatever your choice is, just be sure to stay away from tanning beds as they damage your skin’s cells and can lead to skin cancer.
