Garret Syler, president of Syler Construction Inc., is no newcomer on the building scene. He is a third-generation builder, with a team comprising 200 years of experience. He does not stay with old ideas, he forges ahead with homes that feel fresh and trendy. Syler recently moved their main office to Kearney, MO.

“We are in a commercial building park. We upgraded our office to accommodate our future clients,” he explained. “Our facility has a new conference room and showroom. We also finished two model homes that were both in the recent Parade of Homes.”

Both are available to tour now. The Avail in the Eagle Point Preserve at Shoal Creek, at 8524 N. Booth Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64158, is their most desired plan. The other Parade home is in the Palisades community in Riverside, the Ridgedale, located at 2571 Riverview Drive, Riverside, MO  64150.

The Avail is the home featured here, with photos to demonstrate unique characteristics and includes many artistic features. Syler points out the wine nook off the large kitchen which gives guests a view of the opulent wines available and showcases the owner’s collection. The 12-foot sliding door leads to the screened deck featuring a warming fireplace to enjoy the golf course view. On the front of the house, you will see glazed Overhead doors, which are another detail to add to the modern design, along with a mix of stone, stucco, and illuminating downlights.

“From the entry, you’re able to see through the house; it looks so spacious,” Syler describes.

The Avail is designed in the Contemporary / Clean line Theme incorporating Universal Design Architecture. The great room has a 12-foot ceiling with wood beam details and a fireplace with floor to ceiling stone which is flanked by custom live edge wood benches. The expansive open kitchen features a 10-foot island with stone countertops.

The main level laundry room with sink is a plus, along with the main level flex suite which can be a dining room or office is accented with a stunning, stained wood detail in the vault and vertical shiplap on the wall. The lower level is finished with two bedrooms and a wet bar. The master bathroom includes a beautiful free-standing tub beside a double head walk-in shower enclosed in clear glass.

This family-owned business, including commercial and development divisions, builds diverse model floor plans in different communities around the Northland to establish themselves in highly desirable school districts, such as Liberty, Park Hill, Staley Farms, Kearney and Smithville.

Nine base plans in the $400,000-$1 million price range cater to a variety of home buyers, but especially those downsizing from monster-size houses who still want nice things.

“Relocators love golf club lifestyle communities, such as Staley Farms, Eagle Point, Shoal Creek and Palisades in Riverside,” he noted.

One design trend that is ‘in’ yet not all that visible is Universal Design. Examples include three-foot-wide entries and zero-entry access points, as seen in shower and garage door entries, and even elevators and lifts. This extra thoughtfulness is helpful for clients whose parents move in with them, and even those thinking ahead for themselves.

“This is often the last home people anticipate living in,” Syler says.

That’s why his team puts much emphasis on the upfront design process.

“We design according to how we would personally live in our homes,” Syler notes, adding that he’s open to buyers considering hybridizing plans; for instance, taking the master suite wing of one floor plan and the kitchen of another to create something new.

“In a normal spec house, you’re not allowed to change anything, but we are open to changes. We encourage clients to bring ideas to us,” Syler says. “It’s easy to fall into a rut building the same stuff over; we’d prefer to keep up with the trends.”

That said, while Syler encourages clients to browse ideas on tv, Houzz and construction marketing sites, he cautions that some ideas aren’t practical. “We are the professionals and can gauge whether it’s a good or bad idea,” he says. “Most of the time we can accommodate, but 10 percent of the time, we can’t do it because of xyz.”

The design process remains fluid, with multiple options. It starts with the company’s selection book, which lays the groundwork for pricing on standards and upgrades, covering everything from countertop materials, carpet and trim to decks, stone and fireplaces.

“It allows them to spend their budget however they want,” Syler explains. “Plus, it keeps everyone accountable and on the same page from the beginning of the project through the end.”

He adds, “Whether you have a sky-high budget or tight budget, we give you the best bang for your buck.”
