Stumpff HomeWorks
Design & Remodel

Residential remodeling works best when decisions are made carefully and carried through consistently. That belief shapes the work of Stumpff HomeWorks, a Kansas City-based firm founded in the spring of 2011 with the goal of keeping design decisions and construction execution closely connected.
Owner Tom Stumpff arrived at that approach through years of firsthand experience in the field. “After a decade of hands-on work, it was time to hone my skillsets and push into a more design-focused path,” he explained. The shift marked a move toward shaping projects earlier, when design decisions can be made with a clear understanding of how they will be built.
Today, Stumpff HomeWorks operates with design and remodeling managed entirely in house. “What sets us apart is the in-house design and remodeling aspect,” Stumpff said. “High level remodeling and finishes and the expertise behind the decision-making process. The creative vision plus multiple years of field experience ensures a proper long-lasting, timeless design.” With responsibility kept in one place, projects move from planning to construction with continuity and clarity.
Rather than applying a single look across all projects, the firm works comfortably within a wide range of architectural styles. “Streamlined and intentional, catering to any design aesthetic that our clients may favor,” is how Stumpff describes the approach. The focus remains on layouts that function well, materials that stand up to daily use, and details that age gracefully over time.
Before a project begins, early conversations help determine whether the fit is right. Scope, timing, and budget are discussed upfront. “We ask every potential new client, ‘What is your scope of work, time frame to start, and preliminary budget associated with the scope of work?’ before setting up a consultation for a high-level estimate,” Stumpff shared. “We establish the expectations up front to make sure we have a smooth design and remodel process.”
That emphasis on planning extends into the design phase, where many potential challenges are addressed before construction begins. When unforeseen conditions do arise, communication remains direct. “We notify our clients and offer solutions that include design and budgetary considerations that will not affect the overall design,” Stumpff noted.
Clients remain involved throughout both design and construction. “We work with our clients throughout the design phase and build phase, communicating each step along the way,” he said. A multi-step design process gives homeowners a clear understanding of layout options, material selections, and associated costs, allowing decisions to be made with confidence.
Strong relationships with trusted vendors and trade partners further support a smooth build. “Having excellent relationships with our trades and vendors make the projects efficient and enjoyable,” Stumpff said. “When you know you can count on anyone we work with, the project naturally flows with less wrinkles and delays.”
For Stumpff HomeWorks, success is measured by follow-through. “A successful project is one that follows our process, delivering a well-designed space within the contract pricing and scope of work,” Stumpff explained.
Looking ahead, the firm’s focus remains unchanged. “Our goal is to achieve a timeless design no matter what aesthetic, and to be smart in our approach to a longer lasting design with proper materials and placement.”
FRESH VIEW
“Homeowners would benefit from fully vetting contractors and their process before starting a project. How do they price their projects, cost plus or fixed pricing? Is the design in house or outsourced? Are they insured both with workman’s compensation and liability? Are they licensed with Johnson County Licensing? These are simple steps to ensure transparency and accountability on any type of substantial home remodeling project.”
