Walking into this new home feels akin to strolling through a garden of beautiful wildflowers in full bloom and being asked to pick your favorite flower. It just can’t be done. So, too, with this home where stunning features beckon for attention.
This 7,200-square-foot house offers an abundance of beauty, from a jaw-dropping fireplace wall to eye-catching light fixtures and gorgeous finishes carried throughout the house including its four bedrooms, four bathrooms and powder room.
The genesis of the house started when the homeowners decided to leave behind their home of 30-plus years in the Lakewood area of Lee’s Summit and build a new house. They found the perfect lot in the newly developed Windsor neighborhood of Lee’s Summit.
“The 3.8 acres of land gave us the space to do everything we wanted – a pool, four-stall garage and a secondary detached garage,” the homeowner says. “We were up for the task of building a house from scratch.”
The couple worked with Contractor Josh Laughlin with True Point Construction, ultimately selecting the floor plan for a “split bedroom house”.
“We liked everything about the layout, especially the high ceilings, large arched roof over the outdoor space in the back and the oversized double front doors,” the homeowners explains.
For the design, they turned to Interior Designer Brenda Anderson with Interior Elements & Design.
“One of the biggest challenges was defining a cohesive look when the clients started with completely different design interests,” Brenda explains. “He leans toward a more traditional, rustic feel. She loves bold color, pattern and a touch of whimsy.”
A balance and blending of both styles prevailed.
“We focused on classic details and finishes for him, then added in playful textiles, art and accent colors that reflected her personality,” says Brenda. “The mix created a space that feels layered, personal and beautifully unexpected.”
The Hearth Room commands attention with an embedded 10-foot-wide vapor fireplace on a wall covered in black slate tile with a bamboo pattern, extending 18 feet up to the peak of the vaulted ceiling. A curved sectional, two oversized coffee tables made of petrified wood and an antelope-patterned blue rug anchor the space.
But the fireplace almost didn’t happen; it wasn’t in the original floorplan.
“I saw a vapor fireplace and loved the idea of having one,” she says, so it became a mid-process addition.
The main floor’s open concept highlights the kitchen with its floor to ceiling stained cabinetry and cream-colored countertops with gold and black veining. The black and gold repeat in other elements – a gold band on the custom hood, black and gold light fixtures, and the brown leather banquette and black oval table nestled into an oversized L-shaped island.
“We wanted a big table and lots of seating because the kitchen is where everyone ends up when we have family here,” notes the homeowner.
The kitchen also houses a nearby nook where a tulip table and four wingback swivel chairs provide an “elevated area” for enjoying conversation and a view of the outdoors, according to Brenda.
Even the main level laundry room sports unexpected elements – blue cabinetry, blue appliances and 24” x 48” porcelain floor tile with a flowing blue motif.
“We wanted to create the feeling of walking on water with the tile,” Brenda says. “Keeping everything so dark and saturated makes the room much more dramatic.”
In addition, the bathrooms and powder bath all offer “wow” features.
“We love all the bathrooms,” the homeowners agree. “Each one is so unique and has amazing tilework.”
The bathroom in the main suite showcases a backlit piece of cristallo inset in the wall behind the soaker tub, a countertop of quartzite with green veining, and a wallpaper mural of draping leaves in the toilet room.
In the powder bath, black wallpaper in a burnt wood finish covers the walls begging to be touched while the gold-leafed ceiling draws the eye up. A gold lit sink sits atop a vanity with black and white inlaid bone.
“Wallpaper was really important to add depth, texture and interest,” says Brenda. “We wanted a huge wow.”
Tile plays a notable role in the other bathrooms where embossed textured tile mimics the look of wallpaper and appeals to the sense of touch. In addition, handmade mustard-colored tiles provide the backsplash and continue up the wall in the cook’s kitchen.
Looking up, the house’s many light fixtures offer a stylish flair. These elements of panache range from orbs of white glass chunks in the entryway to gold twig fixtures in the office and the stairwell to golden pendant lights with cutouts dangling above the nightstands in the main bedroom suite.
“The fixtures are fun and playful and represent [ the wife’s ] personality,” says Brenda.
Pops of color in the art and décor dot the walls and shelves. A hand-painted mural of an oversized peacock with vivid blue and green feathers adorns the wall of a flex room the wife spends time relaxing.
In contrast, the lower level reflects the husband’s preferred aesthetic with creams, browns and blacks dominating the color palette.
“For the bar top, we used a leathered granite and created a chiseled edge to foster a feeling of ruggedness,” Brenda says. “We installed a smoked mirror behind the bar shelves to bounce light and to highlight bottles and a collection of vintage decanters.”
The lower level offers another dining space, living area, additional bedroom and bath as well as a secondary main bedroom suite with external access. Large sliders open up the space to the outdoor patio and pool.
Overall, the home’s cohesive design brings together all the diverse elements into a lovely symphony of style.
“I pretty much gave Brenda free rein for the design and love everything she did,” the wife says. “I feel like the house is our oasis.”
