A Seamless Transition

Constructed in the mid-1990s, the original bathroom of this Olathe home had become a bit dated, most notably with respect to the enclosed steam shower that seemed more like a cave than an open and inviting space. Stepping into the former shower space required navigating a cumbersome 10-inch rise. The homeowners’ vision was to transition from the traditional style of their home to a more contemporary space, which included this bathroom, but in a manner that would integrate traditional and modern materials seamlessly.

The award-winning Hastings Remodeling, LLC, overseen by Member/Manager Jim Hastings, retained the original bathroom’s footprint, challenging the design boundaries of the existing space. Working not only with the homeowners, but also with Hastings’ head carpenter, Ken, and with the late architect Gene Norton, the outcome of this collaboration produced a stunning blend of old and new. One of the bathroom’s showstoppers is the wood beams. Structurally crafted from wood and wrapped in moisture-resistant teak, these beams introduce an unexpected layer of warmth to the space.

Complementing the beams is the use of porcelain tiles, lending the space the appearance of marble. In a departure from the glossy sheen commonly favored, this bathroom indulges in a more understated matte finish. The continuity of using the same tile throughout lends cohesiveness to the space.

The incorporation of glass shower walls addressed the homeowner’s desire for a blend of aesthetic allure and functionality. The shower itself, while still boasting steam features, is now more accessible. Not just a seat, the bench  inside the shower cleverly hides a pullout drawer on its side, maximizing utility.

The vanity, in its original location, was given a new lease on life. It flaunts a quartz countertop, brushed nickel faucets, revamped doors, and modern pulls. Further, the three LED-lighted mirrors enhance the overall appeal of the doors, pulls, faucets and quartz. Adding a personal touch, one of the homeowners crafted wooden shelves that decorate both the tub and the vanity, accentuating the room’s warmth.

Further, the homeowners’ discerning eye for decor played an integral role in material and appointment selections, making the space uniquely theirs. They longed for a light, airy, comfortable, and functional bathroom. Today, they awaken each morning appreciative of how Hastings attentively listened and delivered beyond expectations. Their bathroom is not just a testament to impeccable design but is also easy to maintain and navigate. This bathroom remodel showcases an art form that successfully combined the homeowners’ vision with Hastings’ unmatched craftsmanship.

“This space had lots of potential, and with the great ideas of the homeowners, we made it accessible, functional, and visually appealing,” expressed Hastings.
