Cabinet IQ

Raise Your Kitchen IQ!

Story by Judy Goppert

When it comes to kitchens, Cabinet IQ fills the bill. It’s not hard to see what sets the company apart from others in the industry. Look no further than the owner, Nik Johnsson. He is an extremely involved owner who not only has the experience to ensure each job is completed accurately, but he also ensures that customers are completely satisfied with the end result which helps explain their 5-Star reviews.

Our lead designer Synthia Wilson praised, “The most rewarding part of my work is to revitalize a space into a newly imagined room. It is my goal to exceed the clients expectations.”

With over two decades in big box store retail management, Johnsson has a passion for great customer service. He believes in going above and beyond for every customer and he always strives to ensure they are just as excited as he is about their new purchase.

Cabinet IQ continues to stand out as a smart, reliable choice for homeowners looking to transform their spaces. As a fast-growing cabinetry and countertop franchise, the brand’s Overland Park location has made a strong impression in the Kansas City market with its commitment to quality, design expertise, and customer-focused process.

“I was drawn to Cabinet IQ because the company models the values that I strongly believe in,” Nik noted. He goes on to share, “Cabinet IQ is based in Austin, Texas and I am actually one of the first investors in the company. Our showroom in Overland Park was the second franchise location to open in the country.”

Cabinet IQ designers are known not just for creating beautiful kitchens, but for transforming outdated or inefficient layouts into spaces that are both functional and inspiring. The process is deeply collaborative, with clients involved in every decision along the way, from layout and cabinetry to finishes and functionality.

The team uses advanced 3D rendering software to help clients visualize their new kitchens before construction begins. This visual aid helps eliminate uncertainty and gives homeowners the confidence to move forward, knowing exactly what to expect. Whether working on a $10,000 refresh or a $100,000 full renovation, the team prioritizes clear communication, smart design, and respect for the homeowner’s budget.

Helping Clients Choose the Right Scope

A key part of the Cabinet IQ experience is helping homeowners determine whether they need a small upgrade or a full kitchen transformation. During the initial consultation, designers take time to understand the homeowner’s lifestyle, cooking habits, space constraints and long-term goals. If the existing layout functions well but aesthetics are outdated, a simple countertop or cabinet refacing project may be the right fit.

On the other hand, if the kitchen feels cramped, lacks storage, or isn’t serving the family’s daily needs, a comprehensive redesign is often the better investment. The team approaches each home  individually, offering honest guidance to ensure the solution aligns with both need and budget.

As for trends, he is seeing a lot of interest in kitchens with a combination of stained wood and painted cabinets. Sage green, black, and creamy whites have become popular paint options. They are also seeing a growing interest in the European style frameless cabinets.

They offer full kitchen design services, and eight different lines of cabinets as well as countertops from Cambria, MSI, and Daltile. They offer a great selection of cabinet hardware from brands like Richelieu and Jeffrey Alexander, sinks and faucets from Karran, and aftermarket cabinet hardware from Rev-A-Shelf.

“We specialize in designing functional kitchens. We also take on smaller projects such as countertop replacements and vanities,” he shared.

The home featured is owned by Courtney and Erik Klahn, who are thrilled with their new kitchen! Their home in Kansas City was built in 2001, and they moved in as the second owners in 2016.

“We had been wanting to remodel our kitchen for several years because it was outdated and not meeting all our needs,” Courtney noted. “We wanted something more modern and functional. Our son’s upcoming high school graduation party was the motivator to kick start the project.”

They contacted Cabinet IQ in December, and the kitchen was completed for the May party.

“Nik and his designer were creative in helping us figure out ways to incorporate our wishes into our design. These included things like a large built-in fridge and freezer to hold the food for our family with three growing boys, a large 16’ island that also functions as our table, and a drop zone for our keys, dog leashes and personal items. It’s my favorite feature!”
