Even though he has a new award to hang on the wall – the American Dream Award Gold Award Winner from this year’s Spring Parade of Homes, custom builder DeWayne Spiess is not one to rest on his laurels for very long. After all, he has work to do. Building homes and making clients happy is a top priority for him.

A Kansas City native and graduate of De Soto High School, Spiess began building his professional resume at a young age. When he was a teenager, he worked for a friend’s family business in the HVAC trade, installing units in new construction homes. While he certainly enjoyed having extra money in his pocket at the time, most importantly this experience presented him the unique opportunity to learn about different aspects of the construction trade. His appetite whetted, he never looked back and began his professional career at age 18. Today, with 20 years of experience building houses with different companies, Spiess recently established his own company, Spiess Custom Homes, LLC and dedicates his time and talents to delivering the best in the custom home building experience to his clients.

Based in De Soto, Spiess enjoys sticking close to his roots. While he is happy to build new homes most anywhere in the metro area, he primarily builds in De Soto, Lenexa, Olathe and Shawnee with home prices ranging from the low $300,000s to the upper $600,000s.

One of his show-stoppers is The Chalet, a breath-taking modern farmhouse-styled home located within the WaterCrest Landing, a new maintenance-provided subdivision in Lenexa, which is laced with stunning details and a variety of complementary materials, including brick, shiplap, quartz, marble, porcelain tile and so much more. Listed at $579,000, this one-of-a-kind home is bursting with creative inspiration at nearly every turn.

“From the brick backsplash and custom cabinets in the kitchen to the luxury vinyl tile plank flooring in the basement to the mixture of granite and quartz countertops throughout, this house pretty much has it all,” expressed Spiess, whose wife is primarily responsible for the interior design appointments and luxurious finishes in the home. From the front elevation clear through the back of the house, it is all about the details and making a strong impression, ensuring compromise is never part of the equation.

Spiess does not hold back when it comes to upscale standard features, and among the premier delights of this home are the upgraded hardwood floors, the eight-inch crown molding in the living room and the eight-inch trim work throughout the home. For Spiess, standard offerings are  synonymous with premium touches, and he appreciates the entire team with which he works to help him welcome each new client to their new custom home.

“The crews I work with have been with me for a long time, so we have developed that level of trust that comes from such a long-standing relationship,” noted Spiess, who understands that building a fully custom home means creating a wholly personal space while minimizing the need to compromise. And to ensure everything is completed to the client’s satisfaction, Spiess is on the job sites daily.

“I show up at every house, every day,” he confirmed. From start to finish and beyond, Spiess is the primary point of contact for his clients, sitting down with them initially to review pricing and plans through the final walk-through of   the completed home.

Putting all the little “extras” into each project is what sets Spiess Custom Homes, LLC apart from the rest.

“I like building at a price point where we can incorporate unique design elements and more,” he said. “I love bringing new ideas to the table and seeing how they work within the home.”

And if clients have their own ideas in mind, Spiess enthusiastically welcomes those, as he also enjoys the collaborative process of seeing an idea come to fruition. He certainly has a passion for his craft and his creative wheels tend to be constantly in motion.

“I love seeing the design come together and I enjoy coming up with new ideas you don’t typically see every day,” he noted. “I love to add that ‘wow’ factor to every house I build.”
