Sustainability
With Sustainability month (April) having just recently ended, I have collected a few thoughts and found relevance in the current economy. What is Sustainable Interior Design? Sustainable design focuses on the synergy between economic concepts and ecological principles. Both need to be taken into account when the entire life cycle of a structure is considered – from source materials to waste management. Sustainability initiatives work to limit environmental consequences for the earth while also mitigating costs.
Let’s talk about several ways sustainable design not only reduces environmental impact, but also offers significant economic benefits. Some of the most popular options involve: upcycling, using second-hand or vintage pieces, utilizing energy-efficient lighting, installing water-efficient fixtures, and adding Energy Star-rated windows and appliances. Each of these potential choices can not only be classified as sustainable, but can save a significant amount of money over the long run.
It’s no wonder that during this year’s KBIS, held in Las Vegas, it was stated that “sustainability took center stage.”
The kitchen and bath industry showcased eco-friendly materials, recycled surfaces, water-efficient solutions, and energy-conscious appliances. Companies from Cosentino, Kohler, and LG, to Toto, Laminam, and Brazil, all featured products contributing to the future of sustainable design. (See products pictured)
Economical, luxurious, and green. Sustainable Interior Design is where these principles coincide to help address our ecological footprint, while offering a cost-effective solution for our bank accounts.
