National Find a Rainbow Day is a sunshiny way to welcome Spring.
Story by Judy Goppert
Nothing raises our spirits as the surprise rainbow that brightens the sky with soft colors after a spring rain. When we were little, we thought there was a pot of gold at the end and tried to find it. Alas, rainbows are illusive visions that trick the eyes, as they disappear when you change location. Caused by the reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water with the result being a visual spectrum of light appearing in the sky, forming a multicolored ark. They always appear on the side of the sky directly facing the sun. Such a dreamy natural miracle.
Here are some songs you can sing in your head or find online to play:
Kermit the Frog’s Rainbow Connection: “Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me.”
Judy Garland’s song from Wizard of Oz “Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.”
Kacey Musgraves song, Rainbow, “Let go of your umbrella, ‘cause darlin’, I’m just tryin’ to tell you, that there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head.”
Now that you have these happy melodies in your head, you are ready to celebrate National Find A Rainbow Day, which is set for April 3rd. There are many imaginative ways to do this, and if you just relax and smile, you’ll come up with some.
The awe of seeing one always creates a magical feeling, and you expand on that by say, creating your own rainbow feeling. That may come from the first spring flower you see on a walk, or reading a book that captures your imagination, or trying the simple joy of scheduling a wine-time Facetime call with a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Some activities could include, of course, spending a slightly humid but sunny day finding a rainbow. Try standing with your back to the sun and look to the horizon and hopefully, you’ll get to see a majestic rainbow!
Or you and your kiddos can make your own rainbow by shooting a light mist from the water hose at a certain angle that catches the sun. This creates your own personal rainbow. Other ideas are creating tie-dye shirts which always turn out in a rainbow color. Something else is to use colored chalk to draw rainbows on your driveway or sidewalk or paint a rainbow to frame and give to a neighbor to share your love.
More activities can include rainbow-colored cupcakes or cookies just to sprinkle some color into your day.
And if you love crystals and their mesmerizing ambiance, like rainbows they come in so many beautiful colors! Not only that, but like rainbows, crystals are rare gems, they take a specific force of nature to be created. Recharge the energy you need with different crystals and just enjoy their sheer beauty. They are nothing short of beautiful and with meditation you will feel sublime.
And we’ve all seen people with that pretty unicorn or mermaid hair…why not call it Rainbow Hair! You can ask your hair gal to create it for you or find the colors online and DIY. It doesn’t have to be permanent, but you will catch some attention when you show your new springtime locks.
Throw a rainbow party! There is always rainbow sherbert, Lucky Charms or Skittles of course, so why not try a healthy rainbow fruit bowl, with blueberries, purple and yellow grapes, strawberries and don’t forget edible flowers. Colorful flutes for your champagne will brighten any table.
Rainbows exude happiness, as does your pretty smile. Celebrate by adding a rainbow to a pic of you and your bestie or your favorite yoga photo, use the Rainbow Love App and share it on social media.
For your kids, try making a rainbow out of LEGO bricks, and glue fruity, colorful cereal in the shape of a rainbow on canvas paper. If you feel very ambitious, glue colorful crayons in that rainbow shape on that canvas paper and turn on the hairdryer to watch them melt together in a bright shape.
No matter how you celebrate, simply keep the attitude of love and light in your heart and drink in the warmth of spring. Soon, all the colors of Spring will bring their own natural beauty to your yard.
Another thought, if we want the rainbows, we must put up with the rain. Wishing you many rainbow moments throughout your day. #FindARainbowDay
