We’re in it, Kansas City: the throes of winter. And what’s the first thing to suffer when the wind whips and the temperatures drop below freezing? Your style.

Look, I get it. Function over fashion – nobody wants to lose a limb to frostbite for the sake of a great outfit.

However, I have a solution to this problem: the statement coat! There are some killer coats in shops right now (and at a discount during those post-holiday sales!) that are not only gorgeous, they’re also warm!

I’m showing you a version of this in a camel-colored faux fur coat. Not only is it super soft, this coat is essentially the stylish version of wrapping yourself in a winter blanket. Yes, please! Deep, fur-lined pockets keep your hands from freezing, and you have the option to belt the coat to really buffer against the winter wind. This color is so on trend for winter, too. Whether you call it whiskey, camel, or cognac, it’s a gorgeous color that works on every skin tone. And while it’s a wear-with-anything neutral, camel is also not your basic black or navy blue.

As it is with any good piece of outerwear, this coat can be worn with many different outfits. I love it here over roughed-up Levi’s 501s and a pair of tough ankle boots. The boots provide some attitude while staying in the color palette for a cohesive effect. A rugged and glam combination is also at play: tough jeans and boots, luxurious fur.

How else can you wear this coat? You can add some glam to your office outfit by wearing it over a classic button-up and tailored trousers. Want to dress it up? Throw it on top of a little black dress and tights for a super chic Valentine’s Day look.

And if faux fur isn’t your thing, consider a statement-making alternative: a winter trench in a bright plaid, a jewel-toned wool wrap coat with an oversized collar, or even a puffy printed parka (think camo, leopard, or stripes). Lots of options to make a bold statement with your outerwear this season. Style can survive, even in the bitter cold!
