January and February call for clothes that actually feel like armor, and this look centers on one reliably good piece: a longline, trench-style coat in dense wool. Worn slightly oversized, it creates an instant silhouette: broad at the shoulder, long at the hem, so the rest of the outfit can stay relaxed and practical underneath. Perfect for blustery winter days in the Midwest!
Underneath, I paired a black cashmere sweater with wide-leg, slouchy gray trousers. The sweater is polished, but cashmere is breathable, so no worries about overheating as I move between heated offices and chilly sidewalks. Note the cool boxer-style waistband, a subtle trend detail that gives the trousers a modern, comfortable fit without losing their tailored feel. The pleats and volume keep the look from feeling boxy once the coat is on.
To keep things grounded and wearable, I finished with black and white Nike sneakers. They add streetwise polish and make this outfit fully livable for long days – commutes, quick meetings, midday errands – without sacrificing the elevated point of view we all strive for at the start of a new year.
Styling notes: swap the sneakers for a pointed ankle boot if you need something dressier. When it’s extra cold outside, layer a thin merino tee under the cashmere and add a wool scarf to the look; both are tuckable and not bulky. The longline coat also works as a transport piece: take it off in the office to reveal a clean, proportional outfit that still reads intentional.
This is a straightforward outfit formula for early-2026 dressing: one great coat, soft layers, and a modern trouser shape. Practical, warm, and decidedly polished.
